Friends of the Tenley-Friendship Library invites you to the 2018 Henry Mitchell Lecture., “Managing and Identifying Pests in the Garden,” by Manuel Rojas, Lead Garden Educator of Love & Carrots.

Home gardens are often plagued by common pests that limit productivity. Manuel Rojas will help us identify and manage these pesky problems by explaining Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies used by Love & Carrots to protect crops and ensure our gardening success.

Dedicated to sustainable farming since his childhood in Paraguay, where his family cultivates organic/fair trade sugar cane, Manuel joined Love & Carrots in 2015. With a degree in Agriculture Science and a concentration in Sustainable Agriculture and Entrepreneurship from Costa Rica’s EARTH University, Manuel has worked on sustainable farming projects in Latin America and the US. At Love & Carrots he pursues his passion for urban farming and  growing healthy food and enjoys sharing his knowledge with gardeners throughout the DC/MD/VA region.

Love & Carrots is a small, woman-owned company that started with one woman and a pickup truck. Since then, they have grown to a staff of as many as 15 during the growing season. They have built and planted over 500 gardens for residents and businesses in the DC Metro area.

Henry Mitchell Lectures

Since 1995, the Friends of Tenley Library has sponsored annual lectures on topics of interest to local gardeners in memory of Henry Mitchell, who lived in Tenleytown/American University Park and was until his death in 1993 one of America’s great garden writers. For over two decades Mr. Mitchell was the Washington Post garden columnist. His books include The Essential Earthman(1982), One Man’s Garden (1992), and Henry Mitchell on Gardening (1999). The lectures are free and open to the public.
